At some point, we have or will need to travel with children in the car. Here are 5 tips to ensure your perfect holiday, doesn’t end in disaster.
You may notice that kids don’t often understand the time pressure of most activities. When travelling with children, always allow extra time to get to a destination, and timing of activities so that you are not rushing, and losing your cool with the amount of toilet stops or tantrums.
When children get bored, they are more likely to fight with siblings or throw tantrums. Always have a wide range of in car movies, games and activities for the children to do. Portable DVD players and colouring in are always a good idea.
Always ensure that you have packed early to ensure that you don’t forget anything. If letting children pack their own bags, always double check to make sure they haven’t packed anything that’s not needed. (Because you know they won’t be the ones carrying it around).
A great tip if you are travelling over a few days and needing to stay at a hotel for one night, pack a separate bag for that night with the essentials (pjs, toothbrushes, underwear), so that you are not unpacking all of the bigger bags.
Don’t forget that this is a holiday for you as well. Ensure that you bring along whatever helps you relax, whether that be a book, laptop, or that bottle of wine that you can do while the children play, or while they sleep.
There is nothing worse than getting to your accommodation and finding out they are not kid friendly. When booking accommodation, ensure that there are adequate activities to give you a break, eg: games room, outdoor activities, and also a kid friendly food outlet. Many places may not offer a kid friendly area where it’s acceptable for the kids to walk around and make a bit of noise.
